What followed was actual descent. I went into the deepest parts of my own subconscious, my relationship to power, to God, to money, to eros, to my own body. I confronted what was there. The sexual charge I had been managing. The hunger I had been taught to keep quiet and what that containment had cost.

What I came out with was a relationship to power that was actually mine. The hunger became a source of direction. The sexuality became a practice. I became someone whose loyalty was to her own soul above anything else, and whose authority no longer needed external conditions to hold.

The structure most systems teach asks you to suppress desire in exchange for approval, coherence, or spiritual status. It works, in a particular way, for a particular kind of life. What it costs is command and the quality of presence that comes from someone who has stopped performing stability. The suppression of eros and sexual will is one of the oldest and most effective forms of control. Most people live inside it without recognizing that is what it is.
